Music Matters: Lana Del Ray: Born To Die

Lana Del Ray's debut album, "Born to Die," reminds a jaded, pessimistic generation, acutely aware of its civilizations's harbingers of doom, to relax. The album, at it's core, is a Rorschach test that measures the listener's ability to "stop worrying and love the bomb."

Del Ray has created an album that accepts that the end is nigh but refuses to accept hopelessness. It's true that the laconic orchestration that buttresses each track is more "Requiem" than "He is Risen." An ominous church bell rings out in the opening measures of "Video Games," as a few lonely chords drone out of the piano, but then, like a joke in a eulogy, a few strums from the harp subtlety alter the mood.

The lyrics weave the story of a fantasy women who says things like,

"...this is my idea of fun/ Playing video games/It's you, It's you it's all for you / Everything I do. I tell you all the time/Heaven is a place on earth with you/ Tell me all the things you wanna do..."

When I first heard these lyrics I frantically sent the song to a friend and said, "Finally, a love song for the men of our generation." But Del Ray's vocals suggest that my enthusiasm should have been somewhat tempered. While there are moments of loving lilts in her vocalization the artificial echo effect added to her voice creates a sense of distance and her husky nasal tone sounds more resigned than passionate (for more blatant cues see the video above). When the lyrics are examined under this light they seem to suggest that loving a man who loves video games is more best-available-option than first choice, and a militaristic snare drum rift toward the end of the track signifies that she will march on content in this reality.

But Del Ray is not merely interested in putting a happy face on a less than desirable situation, she is interested in why we buy into the facade. The violin arrangement at the top of "National Anthem," is reminiscent of The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony," a song that laments, "You're a slave to money then you die." Del Ray reframes the sentiment with the lyric, "Money is the reason we exist / Everybody knows this, kiss, kiss." While the tone echoes The Verve's nihilism, there is an undertone of cheekiness that suggests that although we are all hopelessly consumed by masking our problems with money and things, deep down we all know this does not work. In a track entitled "Carmen" the heroine "...doesn't have a problem/ Lying to herself because her liquor's top-shelf," and neither do we.

"Born to Die" is the soundtrack for Millennials who never expected to receive a Social Security check or find more happiness than unboxing a new iThing. We have a keen sense that our money is going to run out and the comfort afforded to us by our stuff will not last. Del Ray reminds us that, while all of that is true, we can always have our "Pabst Blue Ribbon on ice," and laugh in the face of despair.

Heather Traska is the one-woman a cappella Girl Talk of Disney songs. A star is born.

Predictions: 1) She will get her wish of being on Ellen (Tweet Ellen!); 2) She will be on an episode of Glee and 3) She will be the voice of the next Disney princess (this is obviously the boldness prophecy). My favorite part starts at 2:50 and goes to 4:35 (Let's Get Down to Business, Mulan melting into the greatest Disney song of all time, Reprise to One Jump Ahead, Aladdin). I would have ended the video here, but she's from a younger Disney-movie-watching generation who saw movies like Hercules and Tangled (a movie that brought tears to my 16 year-old brother's eyes because, he said, "Some parts [of Tangled] are just so deep") so she had to pack in more songs.

So, take a trip down memory lane and listen to Heather Traska sing Disney songs like you've never heard them before.

Movie Matters: 10 Things I Hate About You

I just popped in the shiny 10th Anniversary Blu Ray of 10 Things I Hate About You. This is the hands down the best Julie-Stiles-plays-90s-teenager-version-of-a-Shakespearian-heroine movie ever made.

Couple of great things about the 10th Anniversary edition.

Heath Ledger gets a lot of love on the back cover for being the Joker, which is fair because he got the Oscar and he died a glamorous death of a young famous mega star on the top
Inflation is a bitch. Two movie tickets cost $15 (with popcorn, $53).Verona does all of his dirt for less than $500.00, the cost of an iPad.
There are so many songs in this movie that I don't remember at all - from the movie, from the radio, from anywhere.

Quotes that are still really awesome...

"And I'm back in the game"

"Kisses don't keep me elbow deep in placenta."

"Normal? Like those damn Dawson's River kids?"

"And go hear a band that blows by rule?"

Local News Matters: Starburst Dress

I hope KARE 11 ran this story to make fun of people from Wisconsin, but it doesn't really matter because people out East don't know the difference between Minnesota, Wisconsin or any of the other northern midwestern state. As a kid, I used to save Starburst wrappers and I'm not really sure why. Maybe it was because I was living in Minnesota and during the harsh winter months going outside was not an option and we didn't have cable. I kept my wrappers in a box and organized them by color and that was about it. At least this women made something out of her hoard of wrappers. Mine ended up in a pile of stuff I left in Minnesota before I left for warmer climes.

Movie Matters: 2011 Oscars: And the Nominees Are Alright

First thoughts, Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush are geniuses but they got in on the coat tails of Colin Firth's tour de force performance in the "King's Speech."

"The Kids Are All Right" is the perfect portrait of the Whole Foods American family and every Obama voter should go see it right now.

"Inception" was the second most fun I had at the theater last year.

"The Social Network," yawn.

Other thoughts, this is the first time in a long time that a number of the films nominated were released all throughout the year.

Snubs include "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" (Best Adapted Screenplay) and "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" (Best Picture Ever and the most fun I had at the theater this year).

Movie Matters: The Warrior's Way and the Catch Phrase of the Year

Warrior's Way looks over stylized, hackneyed and freaking awesome. During the first 10 seconds of the commercial (not the trailer above) I thought it was for the DVD release of Ninja Assassin but then there was the close up of Geoffrey Rush as his character deadpans, "Ninjas. Damn."

Wow. That may be the catch phrase of the year.

Book Matters: Gary Shteyngart @ Politics and Prose

Super Sad True Love Story, Gary Shteyngart, Random House - Buy it wherever (e)books are sold.

After going through all the trouble of hosting Gary Shteyngart, I'm sure Politics and Prose disagrees with that last bit but after my experience there I doubt I'll ever buy a book from their store. Before I get to the reasons behind my personal boycott of Politics and Prose I would like to reiterate my first point; buy Super Sad True Love Story and more importantly read it. The book is funny, dark and smart. It's science fiction meets bitting satire with a dash of romance. Depending on your feelings about Facebook, Twitter, Kindles, iPads and other ways the internet and technology are rotting your brain this book will either terrify you or strike you as proof positive that the post-literate world it describes is far from being a reality. We could be approaching a post-book-store world if they are paralyzed by fear of new technology instead of inspired to adjust their business model to leverage new technology and promote great works of art.

Reading Super True Sad Love Story on my Kindle prompted me to think about how e-readers are changing the way people read. Ron Charles, in his Washington Post review of Super Sad True Love Story wrote, "I hope the e-book version contains a virus that melts your iPad."

Using Mr. Charles comment as a frame, I asked Mr. Sheyngart about his thoughts on how e-readers are a potential benefit or detriment to literature. His answer was conflicted and it seemed to be a mix of nostalgic longing and the cold hard facts of reality. He referred to physical books as sacred objects that are talismans that reveal a person's true self. But he quickly pivoted from this sentiment as he mentioned the fact that his last book, Absurdistan, was the #1 "accessory" book for young men on the "L" train to Williamsburg who would just carry the book, thereby gaining the credibility of having read it, whether or not they had and this didn't bother the author. He then reported that e-book versions account for about 25% of Super Sad True Love Story sales. Finally he conceded that there will most likely come a day when books are like LPs which are loved dearly by their ever dwindling fan base.

It's fitting that he uses advances in music technology as a metaphor for what's happening with books and e-readers. Recorded sound had a profound effect of music (read Mark Katz's Capturing Sound: How Technology Changed Music for more information) the most important being that it widened a musicians audience. More people could hear music than ever before and record companies got rich off the deal.

Music technology advanced in such a way that empowered consumers to make copies of music themselves. At each innovation record companies fought to keep the power to share music out of consumers hands. They built an entire industry on controlling the creation and sale of the physical object the music happened to be on. The artistic value of the music was always secondary to the economic value of controlling how the music was distributed.

When mp3s and P2P file sharing technology emerged the record companies first reaction was to attack the technology. In doing so, they lost billions as the world of music consumers banded together to become the distributors of the music. Had they embraced the technological shifts as a better way to distribute great art they could have figured out innovative ways to create a new business model.

Politics and Prose has not learned from the music industry's mistakes. I took my Kindle to the reading because my copy of the book is on the devise. I toyed with the idea of getting Mr. Shtyngart to sign it and after he said that he'd signed Kindles and iPhones on his book tour I resolved to let him sign mine. There were about 100 people in line to get their books signed and to make this process as efficient as possible, a Politics and Prose employee(?) was going to each person in line, asking for their desired inscription , writing on a post it note and and marking the title page with it. When she got to me she said, "You better hide your Kindle because they are not allowed in this store." I asked if she were kidding and she said, "No," and moved to the next person in line. I was furious and left the store immediately. Banning Kindles from their stores is the same sort of short sighted thinking that plagued record companies in the naughties and lead to stores like Tower Records to go out of business.

I've sent Politics and Prose an email asking them if this is their actual policy. Their response is below.

While we do not have a policy of banning people from bringing Kindles into our
store, Amazon IS our competitor; the Kindle is their proprietary device, which
does not allow customers to buy books from Politics & Prose – or our
website’s selection of electronic books, which can be read on the Sony Reader,
iPhone, iTouch, and iPad, and Blackberry.

We would prefer that our
displays, recommendations, and author events not be used as a “showroom” for
purchases from Amazon, and we are always happiest when our hard work and efforts
inspire customers to shop with us .

Of course, for us the most
important goal is that customers enjoy our events, and our in-store events
are always free and open to the public.

do hope that we will come back and shop with us again

It seems like they have their head in the right place, but I still don't think telling customers they are not welcome is a great business strategy.

Music Matters: The Rescues Arrive

So I download the [Rescues] EP and its good but I want it to be great...And I tell myself, you are one of the lucky few who even know the magnitude of their potential and I'm satisfied. I feel how Gabriel Mann might have felt when he helped an unknown local artist, Sara Barellies, get some of her songs on tape, that is, I feel confident that I hold important music in my hands that needs to be shared with the world.

When you write something like that for six readers you don't think about being proven right. Never the less, The Rescues have the Single of the Week on iTunes. It's the Entertainment Matters "Download Now" recommended song, "Break Me Out." The song is humming along at 4 stars among iTunes reviewers. TV Matters: Southland

Southland might be the best show no one is watching. The show does an amazing job of grappling with the concept that police officers are flawed human beings who do heroic things for a living. The character arcs are thrilling. Last week's episode saw a police detective weeping and cradling a child criminal (who he was trying to send down a different path) in his arms moments before he was forced to arrest him. It was the most heartbreaking and fantastic scene of television I've seen this year. The acting is top notch. Michael Cudlitz leads the way with his gripping performance as veteran Officer John Cooper. Regina King continues to build on her impressive body of work as Detective Linda Adams. And, for all you Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie) lovers, the king of the OC is back in your living rooms as Officer Ben Sherman.

Southland airs tonight at 10:00PM on TNT. Tune in so that the TV execs realize that great drama is still worth making.

Let's examine the flaws of this video.

First off, is that a boner joke at 0:14?

Second there is a problem with this lyric, "Their kisses may be sweet, but it's not right to cheat," How would a committed lover know the sweetness of the kisses of any other then their betrothed?

Third, "When the honey drips, from candy-coated lips" is far too sexually charged for a kids' show. Wait, so is the topic of adultery.

Fourth, can someone please explain to me how bees are an example for monogamous relationships?

Fifth, there is something extremely creepy about the voice over at 1:49

Soundtracks Matter: Time to Settle the Score

As it gets closer to Oscar night, movie fans and film critics will continue to discuss who will be rewarded or disappointed by this year's Academy Awards. People naturally focus on what they consider to be the "major" awards. (Best Director, Best Picture, Best Leading Actress, etc) But I want to focus on the real magic of the movies... the music. It's true that directors went to film school and actors occasionally have some type of "craft" that is usually wasted on cell phone commercials, but the beautiful, uplifting, sad, frightening, and euphoric musical themes not only compliment what we're watching, but also shape and control our entire theatrical experience. A poorly scored movie is a waste of time. A film who's music encapsulates the raw and sometimes inexpressible emotions of both the characters and audience is nothing short of magic.

This year's Oscar nominations for Best Original Score provide an interesting sample of some of the best movie music of 2009. First let's look at James Horner's nomination for "Avatar". Horner is a powerful composer who is increasing his stronghold on Hollywood's music having already composed for such films as "Legends of the Fall", "Braveheart", "Apollo 13", "Titanic", and "A Beautiful Mind". His approach to "Avatar" was slightly different from the style we've come to expect, but still keeping to his orchestral basics and adding a little more of everything. This is an epic movie for which he provided a score of epic proportions and epic orchestration. Given the films focus on fictional indigenous tribes, he employed a large array of global vocals which blend almost perfectly with culture of the Navi. Looking at his entire body of work, the music to Avatar sounds most similar to Titanic which won his only two Oscars in 1998. (Best Original Score and Best Original Song) It'll be interesting to see if returning to that style earns him the award again.

Looking next at Alexandre Desplat's music for "Fantastic Mr. Fox" we encounter a lesser known composer. Although he's composed for a few well known films and even 2 previous Oscar nominations ("Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "The Queen"), most of his film music career has focused on French films. In this puppet and claymation movie, Desplat takes a more whimsical focus that matches the film's personality and approach. Although he does an impressive job of providing the type of musical that almost perfectly compliments the film, it's difficult to walk away with an Oscar when your orchestration focuses on Banjos and whistling.

The music for "The Hurt Locker" was a surprising nomination for best Original Score. The soundtrack has allot of originality, but very little score. This was a joint composition by Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders who have collaborated on other films such as "I Robot", "Blade", and "Scream". Beltrami received the nomination once before for his work on "3:10 to Yuma", but I think he'll once again go home empty handed. This is an extremely complex psychological film and the music intended to match it's dark internal exploration. What sounds like an attempt to juxtaposition the frustrating anger of war surrounded by Arabic culture ends up sounding like nothing more than a Mosque competing with a Matallica concert. The nomination could've been for Sound Effects.

Hans Zimmer's music for "Sherlock Holmes" also took a very original approach, but presented a fascinating work that was surprisingly fun. Zimmer is a tremendously talented composer ("Crimson Tide", "The Lion King", "Gladiator") who has been nominated 7 previous times and never won the Oscar. The music for "Sherlock Holmes" is disjunct and abrasive yet somehow coherent and organized much like the lead character. His focus on harpsichord gives the entire soundtrack a Victorian feel, but with modern flavor. Also, his frenetic orchestration compliments the entire films urgency as Holmes and Watson frantically search for answers. Zimmer brilliantly combines his musical talent with films personality to create a score that just might win his first Oscar.

Lastly there's Michael Giacchino's second Oscar nomination. (The first was for his work on "Ratatouille") Very seldom have I been so strongly moved by a soundtrack and within the first few minutes of the film, I fell in love. This previously little known composer crafted beautiful sweeping themes that literally saturate the audience with a moving emotional experience. The quieter moments are appropriately intimate and personal, while the larger moments push everyone to the edge of their seats. During the entire film I was mesmerized by the music's beauty and seamless necessity. I'm of course talking about his work on "Star Trek". Why he was instead nominated for "Up", I'm not very sure. Yes, he does an impressive job of employing some beautiful themes with an older style that seems to fit the main character's reminiscence for days gone by. However, it does little else. Giacchino is a talented composer, and I'm glad he was recognized even for the wrong film.

That's my assessment of this year's nominations for Best Original Score. I think this might be the year that Zimmer finally receives what he deserves, but Oscar night is always full of surprises.

Oscar Matters: Sandra Bullock vs. Meryl Streep

I never thought I would say this, but Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) is giving Meryl Streep (Julia & Julia and 15 other Oscar nominations) a run for her money in this year's best actress race. When I saw trailers for The Blind Side I rolled my eyes and yawned. I thought nothing could get me interested in seeing what was clearly going to be an overly sentimental sport-as-metaphor cliché ridden film. On the other hand, 10 seconds into the trailer for Julia & Julia I was psyched to see the movie. My dream girl, Amy Adams, and acting legend Meryl Streep team up in a movie about Julie Child? Sign me up. In hindsight I was duped by the conniving marketing teams of both films but ultimately saved by the Academy's expanded best picture category (which I thought I hated).

First, the ad team for Julia & Julia promised two great stories for the price of one, but they didn't mention the fact that one story was of unequal and lesser value than the other. While the story of Julia Child living with her husband in Paris and her decision to learn the art of French cooking is funny and touching, the story of Julia Powell writing a blog based on Julie Child's famous cookbook is a failed attempt to equate an insignificant woman with the great woman on whose coat tails she rode. It was also tough to watch my future lover Amy Adams struggle with trying to make this frustrating character likable.

Second, the ad team for The Blind Side refused to target this movie at me. They promised me Sandra Bullock, who has made a string of hit or miss movies over the last twenty years, in a wholesome family drama where some white family in the south adopts a black kid who plays football. Totally implausible. Well, it turns out, that the movie is really a character study of affluent southern white Christians confronted with an opportunity to save the life a young black man. The movie takes a balanced look at two communities that are prejudiced against each other and it goes on to show the human ties that bind those two communities together. Sandra Bullock is also a revelation. She plays Leigh Anne Touhy with bitting authenticity and heartfelt compassion which must mean her talent has been tragically wasted on the glib roles of all those low-stakes rom-coms she's been in.

At the end of the day, Sandra Bullock's performance had to be spot on perfect for The Blind Side to work and there is no doubt she nailed it. On the other hand Meryl Streep's outstanding performance could not salvage the mess that was Julia & Julia. Meryl was by far the best part of the movie, as she often is, but I'm of the school that says, the movie needs to be great to receive any Oscars. Sandra Bullock set The Blind Side up to be great and she deserves the Oscar. Oh gods of the Oscars, forgive me.

Oscar Matters: "The Hurt Locker" and "In the Loop"

The Academy has steadily honored Iraq war documentaries but this is the first year that it honors dramatized depictions of the eight year war. That's partly because the war is happening and documentaries are better at capturing real time events. But dramatized depictions of the war harness the power of fiction to make the audience a part of the story.

In 2004, an election year, the Academy awarded the best documentary feature to Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara a cautionary tale about the Vietnam War and the trap of American hubris. This was the first of a series of documentary features honored by the Academy that marked a not so subtle protest of the Iraq war. During subsequent election years they continued the trend, nominating two Iraq war documentary features in 2006, Iraq in Fragments and My Country, My Country (neither won) and three in 2008, Taxi to the Dark Side (winner), No End in Sight, and Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience. It's not shocking that the liberal peacenik hippies of lala land (i.e., the Academy) felt a moral obligation to shine a light on the blunders of the US invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq. But this spotlight was a bit dim.

The documentary is a journalistic form of filmmaking that uses stark facts to tell a story. There's no CGI or clever editing techniques getting in the way of facts. People are interviewed while charts and graphs complete the narrative. Clear, concise and boring. This is not the escape from real life that a night at the movies promises, instead the documentary is a glaring reflection of real life. And while that is an extremely important exercise, especially in the case of the Iraq war, it's not a fun way to spend a Friday night. So while the Academy has honored these Iraq war documentaries with a meteor shower of nominations and Oscars they have failed to light up the sky so the average movie goer can't look away.

With 9 nominations for The Hurt Locker and one for In the Loop the Academy finally turns up the wattage on its Iraq war spotlight. With its nine nominations, The Hurt Locker is tied for the most nominations in 2010 meaning that the Academy is cementing it as one of the films to remember 2009 by. This is a truly great movie that tells a simple, compelling story about soldiers who search for meaning in life when life is cheapened by the scourge of war. Unlike it's documentary brothers, this movie does not delve into the political nuances of why and how the Iraq conflict proves or disproves the efficacy of a policy stance. Instead it deals with how the subtleties of human nature are affected by the Iraq war. The characters in the movie are specific yet representative of the diversity of people touched by this war.

It seems counter-intuative but I think fiction is better suited to reveal truth about human nature than true stories. I think it has something to do with the mutability of fictional realities verses the concreteness of real life. While watching The Hurt Locker I imagined what I would do if put into the same situations as the characters and that gave me a better understanding of myself which added to the film going experience. But when I watched Taxi to the Dark Side, I merely observed the actions of real people. What they did had consequences. Imagining anything different while watching that film would have taken away from the experience. And because most of our exposure to the war is through news reporting (true stories) we compartmentalize the war into something that is outside of ourselves, but fictional depictions of the war give us the latitude to internalize the human impact of the conflict.

The nomination for best adapted screenplay for In the Loop, a brilliant satire of pre-Iraq war Britain and America, was, to me, the biggest shock of the 2010 nominations. First of all, the Academy hasn't consistently honored comedies since the 30s and 40s. And I get it. Comedies are usually poorly made and unsophisticated. In the Loop is neither. The pacing of the movie is lightning fast. Jumping from Downing Street to Pennsylvania Ave, from the Pentagon to the UN this movie's rushed sense of urgency mimics the frenetic pace with which both countries decided to invade Iraq. The concept of hero and villain is obscured by the rampant incompetence and self-promotion of the technocrats on both sides of the Atlantic and the aisle. And after you've laughed at these boobs for an hour and a half you realize that these are the people who convinced you and the rest of the world that Saddam had WMDs. Our collective lack of scrutiny was the farce of this war. And again, you can never get that sort of visibility into human nature by just watching a true story.

As time passes, the films about Iraq will get better and hopefully the Academy will continue to honor all the films that teach us about this conflict but especially the films that expose our individual connection to and responsibilities for the Iraq war.

As a loyal EM reader you know that this blog has a general respect for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science. Their annual awards, commonly known as the Oscars, give the movies the requisite heft to be considered high art. But the announcement of the 2010 nominees irritated me.

First problem, ten best picture nominees. Of course this is not a new phenomenon, but its desperate. Back in the 30's nominating this many films was standard, but back then the Oscars where a more blatant attempt to sell movie tickets. As the awards evolved over the decades it appeared that they were more concerned with honoring a worthy few and were content to let extremely talented artists languish Oscar-free for an entire career (See, Peter O'Toole). They didn't seem to care if they honored movies that no one saw or will ever see (The English Patient). Raising the number of best picture nominees is a shameless attempt to raise Oscar night ratings at the expense of diminishing the prestige of the award. Also, with such a large field the picture that wins theoretically only needs 11% of the vote. Should a picture with that little support be etched in the pages of history forever?

Second problem, Avatar. With nine nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, the Academy is making a bold statement that 2009 was the year of Avatar. I concede that the film grossed over $2 billion, which is good for the industry, and the visual effects rose to level of OMG, but those facts don't make up for the stale plot and stilted dialog. The beauty of film is that it's a collaborative art form but the draw back of that is if there is one weak link the entire production suffers. A best picture nominee should shine from every aspect of the movie making process and Avatar falls short in too many places. Just because people went to see the movie, doesn't mean it's great (See, Spider-Man 3).

Third problem, Star Trek. Science fiction is usually woefully snubbed at the Oscars, but this year the Academy had two science fiction blockbusters that it could honor, and as the knight in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade said they, "choose poorly." Save for visual affects (and that's debatable) Star Trek outshines Avatar in every metric. The story is more compelling, the characters are more fully developed, the stakes of the story are much higher and the movie is just plain fun. If the Academy insists on nominating ten pictures they can't miss the one movie that brought nerds and jocks together in 2009.

Final problem, repeat nominees. I get it. Meryl Streep is the greatest ever and the Coen Brothers are clever. But do we need to be reminded of these facts every year? I look to the Oscar nominations as a chance to see what great performances I might have missed over the last year because there were too many ads for Night at the Museum 2. Of course I'm going to go see Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, and George Clooney. Academy, please, tell me something I don't know.

Guest Post: Avatar Review

Avatar is supposed to be one of the greatest movies of our time. Billed as the most expensive movie ever made at $300 million I can see what they used the money for. The most amazing special effects. Ever. Well...that and ripping off Fern Gully's storyline. Seriously. Think Fern Gully, add in some CGI and 3D and a little difficulty deciphering between what's real and what's not and you have yourself the whole premise of Avatar. When I read that it took James Cameron 15 years to film the movie I thought I was going to see a cleverly written story put to life through graphics like I had never seen. Instead I realized that it took Cameron 15 years to build the technology to film a ripped off storyline.

The character development was enough to make you feel attached to the main characters, but the crappy writing was enough to make me turn to my neighbor and comment on the cheese factor. Also notable is the less than subtle push that humans ruin the Earth and we must take advantage of what we have. While at times hollow and and overblown, the movie keeps its audience captivated and involved with its grandeur. The Na’vi are the most intriguing cinematographic creations to date, with a mix of human features and then features of Cameron's imagination.

My recommendation? See Fern Gully 3, oops I mean Avatar, in the theater. It's worth spending the money to see the special effects because they're amazing and I don't think they'll translate the same way on your tv screen the way they do on the big screen. Is this Cameron's next Best Picture Oscar winner? I highly doubt it. I give the movie a B+.

If you are not intimately aware of every detail of my life then the weekly "Clue Bus" post for each crossword puzzle will help bring you up to speed.

The American Spice Trade Association was founded in 1907 during the great Pepper and Oregano conflict of that summer. Oregano, a relatively new herb in the seasoning game, wanted to be on every table in America right next to the obligatory Salt and Pepper shakers. Pepper, one of the oldest players in the game, went on a rampage converting itself into a deadly spray called "Mace," and launching itself into the face of anyone buying, selling, or trading Oregano.

A drastic shift in the format shifted the day's discussions from panels to one on one interviews and breakout sessions. A meeting with Congressman Hank Johnson and early flight out for my brother prevented me from doing top to bottom coverage of the day but here are some highlights.

Dan Ek from Spotify may have found the new revenue stream the music industry has been looking for; music journalism needs to demonstrate value and come up with a viable business model; and Ian McKaye and Dischord have been a no contract 50/50 label/artist outfit for 29 years.
